Seeking out ways in which literature tangibly impacted societies, i began to explore other fields, including history, philosophy, anthropology, language, and performance studies. The interdisciplinary nature of my work is best illustrated by my senior thesis time out of joint: Issues of Temporality in the songs of okot p'Bitek. In addition to my literary interpretations, the thesis drew heavily on both the Ugandan author's own cultural treatises and other anthropological, psychological, and philosophical texts. By using tools from other disciplines, i was able to interpret the literary works while developing insight into the Ugandan society and popular psychology that gave birth to the horrific Idi Amin regime. In addition, i was able to further understand how people interacted with the works and incorporated (or failed to incorporate) them into their individual, social, and political realities. On a more practical level, writing the thesis also confirmed my suspicion that I would like to pursue an academic career.

Use an editor to spell check essay. My freshman year at, harvard, i was sitting in a postcolonial African Literature class when Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o (the influential Kenyan author) succeeded in attracting me to the study of African literature through nothing more than a single sentence. He students argued that, when a civilization adopts reading and writing as the chief form of social writing communication, it frees itself to forget its own values, because those values no longer have to be part of a lived reality in order to have significance. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that the written word can alter individual lives, affect one's identity, and perhaps even shape national identity. Professor Ngugi's proposal forced me to think in a radically new way: I was finally confronted with the notion of literature not as an agent of vital change, but as a potential instrument of stasis and social stagnancy. I began to question the basic assumptions with which I had, until then, approached the field. How does "literature" function away from the written page, in the lives of individuals and societies? What is the significance of the written word in a society where the construction of history is not necessarily recorded or even linear? I soon discovered that the general scope of comparative literature fell short of my expectations because it didn't allow students to question the inherent integrity or subjectivity of their discourse. We were being told to approach Asian, African, european, and American texts with the same analytical tools, ignoring the fact that, within each culture, literature may function in a different capacity, and with a completely different sense of urgency.
Yale, in contrast, asks simply that a student Reflect on something you want us to know about you. Associate director Rebekah Westphal of Yale explains that the question is, open enough that students write about whatever they feel like at the time, to present themselves to us without trying to fit into a certain topic or question. Elisha Anderson, an Associate director of Admission. Brown, notes that when he used to work in the admission office of a smaller, nonconformist liberal arts college in Massachusetts, he saw so many essays on protests, filmmaking and the food not Bombs movement, that, It wasnt until I started working at Brown—where. The ivies with engineering schools ask for additional essays from prospective engineers, but Cornell, not surprising given its seven colleges, asks salon every applicant for such an academic interest statement. Presumably Princeton and Yale are largely looking for exactly the same qualities in their top applicants—academic aptitude, intellectual depth, awareness of others, leadership qualities, and knowledge of the institution. To help them identify those elements, Princeton asks students to reflect on their own lives by writing, for example, in response to"s on culture, service to the nation, and the practices of inequality.
Colleges take what they get. Admission officers at ivy schools would agree that in telling their truth, students choose topics that more often reflect the reality of their own lives than they do the ethos of specific colleges: Brown admission officers louis Trujillo and Natasha go note, for example, that. Others point to a shift in the overused helping others in exotic locales topic, from the old staple in which a student discover peasants that are happy in spite of their poverty, to one in which witnessing the deprivations of poverty spur students to express. Many students write essays in which they celebrate a rather anodyne version of diversity, marked less by political engagement, for example, than by servings of both sushi and stuffing, masala and mashed potatoes, turkey and tamales, at Thanksgiving dinner. Students desire to write an ivy-inspired essay is also complicated by the nature of the ivy league itself. While the league shares a long tradition of academic excellence, exclusivity, and a set of admissions protocols that relate mostly to athletics (such as an Academic index that all ivy athletes have to meet the eight ivies remain very distinctive institutions. It is hard to imagine how to write a common Application essay that simultaneously speaks to columbias focus on the intellectual value of a core curriculum, Browns notion that such value derives from the absence of a core, cornells proud tradition as a land grant. Of course, there is an element of self-selectivity that may set the essays of some ivy applicants apart from others. But the student who is applying to both Princeton and, pomona has to craft a personal statement that speaks to readers at both schools equally well. As Jon reider, a well-known high school counselor in San Francisco, says, It has never occurred to me that one ivy (or anywhere else) would want a certain kind of essay. The whole point is that the main essay tell that kids own truth.
In this situation, the knots in my stomach came from being asked to participate in the celebration of female genital mutilation; a practice which is decidedly against my personal values of reducing human suffering and promoting womens rights. My visceral reaction came specifically from the idea of watching while doing nothing to intervene. Further, i worried that, as students, our group would be woefully ill-equipped to navigate the nuances of the situation, potentially resulting in harm to our relationship with the community. Plus, due to our association with a medical organization, our presence could be mis-interpreted as an endorsement of the safety of these procedures. With the potential to do harm and without an actionable plan in place for stopping genital mutilation, i concluded that I could not, in good conscience, attend the ceremony. Though I had decided that I could not go, i still felt concerned about the potential impact of the group's attendance, and wanted to gain more insight into the situation before deciding on a course of action.
I shared my concerns with my partner and another student. My partner agreed with me, and we decided to consult his physician father. We quickly learned that Canadian physicians are not legally permitted to condone female genital mutilation, meaning that our attending the ceremony could have legal ramifications for our physician-run organization. . With this information in hand, i knew I had to contact the organization lead about the excursion. She forbid our group from attending, requesting that i inform the other students, who were obviously disappointed that I had "gotten the trip cancelled". Though I believe my course of action was the right one and I would not change the outcome, looking back, i wish I had voiced my concerns earlier; it may have made the end result easier for the other students to swallow. In spite of this, being honest when expressing my discomfort with a situation and choosing an alternative course of action that is aligned with my values has never led me to make a decision that I regret. Though standing up for what you believe in, and doing what is right, is not always easy, it is always worth it, and arguably the only way of living a life without regrets.".

I, however, am weighed down by a profound sense of unease when it comes to the main attraction, the circumcisions. Further, the leader of the organization is absent; should she not be consulted? Do i go along with the group, writings and participate in something that i am morally opposed to? Or do something about it? For me, the strength of a persons character is defined by their ability to act on their values and stand up for what they believe. Having strong moral values only becomes a powerful agent of change when one is willing to follow through on them with action. Situations, such as this one, where i feel a sinking sensation deep in my gut, help to cue me to conflicts with my own values, writing prompting me to gather more information, thus taking the first step towards informed action.
