We live in a world set on producing paper people. And the sad thing is that eventually, if you build your life with paper, you come up empty in the long run. In order to be free you have to move past the facade, past the outer layer to find truth. Even if that means taking a stand in the world and letting go of these paper things. I get it, and I hope our young people will get it too. There is more to life than chasing the illusory and temporary. The gospel boldly and clearly states that you were not created to be a paper person. You have flesh and blood and you are made in the image of God.

On the night of all the pranks, quentin and Margo climb to the top of this tall tower in downtown Orlando. It is here that Margo expresses her view of this town and its residents. She calls it all paper. Paper towns, full of paper people, that eventually will fall apart. Track homes with no substance, lived in by people who are shallow. Eventually at the end of the story when handwriting quentin finds Margo, she tells him that it was not just the town that was paper or the other people who were paper, but she was that way toofake, empty, numb. Shed built this ramshackle life, a facade of what was real and it all came crashing down. I have a feeling that Greens metaphor of paper people and places hits home for a lot. Because there are times when we feel just like that. Its a loss of vision for our lives. It feels like were living a caricature of real life, stuck in a labyrinth of chasing the wind.

After this incredible night of thievery and pranks, margo takes off. Margo runs away and leaves clues for those left behind to her whereabouts. Because she is complicated. Quentin, then, becomes obsessed with finding where margo has wandered off to, even skipping his own high school graduation to track her down. The story traces him putting clues together and eventually solving the mystery of where she has been hiding. And the story ends. So its proposal really a tale of mystery, unrequited love, and angst-filled adolescent stuff. My favorite part of the book is a metaphor Green uses to describe vacuous places and people.

At the beginning of summer, i had a few students (and by students I mean high school girls) in my youth group who recommended I read a few books. So i took them up on the offer becausewellI am a good pastor. This journey led me to a new author named John Green who writes young Adult novels where the protagonist typically is a nerdy guy who spends his every waking moment chasing a beautiful, complicated female.
